Highly creative people often seem weirder than the rest of us. Now researchers know why

He is one of the world’s best known and most successful entrepreneurs, with hundreds of patents to his name—including the Segway scooter. But you will never see Dean Kamen in a suit and tie: the eccentric inventor dresses almost exclusively in denim. He spent five years in college before dropping out, does not take vacations and has never married. Kamen presides (along with his Ministers of Ice Cream, Brunch and Nepotism) over the Connecticut island kingdom of North Dumpling, which has “seceded” from the U.S. and dispenses its own currency in units of pi. Visitors are issued a visa form that includes spaces on which to note identifying marks on both their face and buttocks.

Kamen, who works tirelessly at inspiring kids to pursue careers in science and engineering, is one of many highly creative people whose personal behavior sometimes strikes others as odd. Albert Einstein picked up cigarette butts off the street to get tobacco for his pipe; Howard Hughes spent entire days on a chair in the middle of the supposedly germ-free zone of his Beverly Hills Hotel suite; the composer Robert Schumann believed that his musical compositions were dictated to him by Beethoven and other deceased luminaries from their tombs; and Charles Dickens is said to have fended off imaginary urchins with his umbrella as he walked the streets of London. More recently, we have seen Michael Jackson’s preoccupation with rhinoplasty, Salvador Dalí’s affection for dangerous pets and the Icelandic singer Björk dressed for the Oscars as a swan.

It isn’t just average Joes who perceive highly creative individuals as eccentric. These individuals often see themselves as different and unable to fit in. The latest findings in brain imaging, creativity research and molecular biology suggest that these perceptions are not just based on a few anecdotal accounts of “weird” scientists and artists. In fact, creativity and eccentricity often go hand in hand, and researchers now believe that both traits may be a result of how the brain filters incoming information. Even in the business world, there is a growing appreciation of the link between creative thinking and unconventional behavior, with increased acceptance of the latter.

Making the Connection
The incidence of strange behavior by highly creative individuals seems too extensive to be the result of mere coincidence. As far back as ancient Greece, both Plato and Aristotle made comments about the peculiar behavior of poets and playwrights. (Aristotle was also the first to note the relation between creativity anddepression, an association that has been substantiated by modern research.) More than a century ago Italian criminologist Cesare Lombroso catalogued the bizarre behavior of creative luminaries in his book The Man of Genius and attributed this behavior to the same hereditary “degeneration” that marked violent criminals.

In the past few decades psychologists and other scientists have explored the connection using empirically validated measures of both creativity and eccentricity. To measure creativity, researchers may look at an individual’s record of creative achievements, his or her involvement in creative activities or ability to think creatively (for example, to come up with new uses for ordinary household items). To measure eccentricity, researchers often use scales that assess schizotypal personality.

Schizotypal personality can appear in a variety of forms, including magical thinking (fanciful ideas or paranormal beliefs, such as Schumann’s belief that Beethoven channeled music to him from the grave), unusual perceptual experiences (distortions in perception, such as Dickens’s belief that he was being followed by characters from his novels), social anhedonia (a preference for solitary activities—Emily Dickinson, Nikola Tesla and Isaac Newton, for example, favored work over socializing), and mild paranoia (unfounded feelings that people or objects in the environment may pose a threat, such as Hughes’s legendary distrust of others).

Tue, 31 May 2011 04:43:00 -0700 Jim Tressel Resigns As Ohio State Coach http://business1001.posterous.com/jim-tressel-resigns-as-ohio-state-coach http://business1001.posterous.com/jim-tressel-resigns-as-ohio-state-coach

He said the ongoing investigations and drumbeat of almost daily, sordid revelations were a "distraction" to the university and that he was stepping down "for the greater good of our school."

Tressel is still scheduled to go before the NCAA's committee on infractions in August for lying to the NCAA and then covering it up – the most egregious of sins for a coach in the eyes of college sports' ruling body. The former coach will join school officials at that meeting.

But Ohio State is not required to pay any buyout or severance to Tressel, who made around $3.5 million a year.

Ohio State announced that assistant coach Luke Fickell, already tabbed to take over for Tressel during his self-imposed five-game suspension for his violations, will be the Buckeyes coach for the 2011 season. Ohio State will begin looking for a permanent coach who will take over next year.

Immigration is a boon to American science and math, a new report asserts, noting that 70 percent of the finalists in a recent prestigious science competition are the children of immigrants.

The report by the National Foundation for American Policy, a nonprofit research group in Arlington, Va., states that http://www.livescience.com/6359-state-immigrants.html">many immigrant parents emphasize hard science and math education for their children, viewing those fields as paths to success.

Statistics supporting that belief: According to a recent Georgetown University study on the value of undergraduate majors, the lifetime median annual income for someone with a bachelor's degree in engineering is $75,000, compared with $29,000 for a counseling or psychology major. [http://www.livescience.com/14365-highest-paying-science-majors-infographic.html">Infographic: Highest-paying College Majors]

That study found that the highest earners are http://www.livescience.com/3400-chemistry-life-oil.html">petroleum engineers, with median annual earnings of $120,000.

Fri, 27 May 2011 23:58:00 -0700 Canadians flock to Mexico for tooth care Medical Tourism http://business1001.posterous.com/canadians-flock-to-mexico-for-tooth-care-medi http://business1001.posterous.com/canadians-flock-to-mexico-for-tooth-care-medi

Dayo Dental, an Arizonabased group that helps Americans and Canadians find dental care in Mexico, estimates that roughly 6,000 to 12,000 Canadians travel to Mexico, including Los Algodones, for dental care every year.

This includes the raft of Canadian snowbirds, as well as those who hear about the dental care through family and friends or the Internet, said Dayo's marketing manager Ron Vinluan.

The lure is the much cheaper rates for extensive dental work such as dentures, implants and bridges, Vinluan said.

Dayo Dental itself has 400 Canadian clients, while Vinluan estimates Los Algodones draws roughly 1,500 to 2,500 Canadians each year.

The boom in "medical tourism" is underscored by the fact the number of resident dentists in Algodones has swelled from a few dozen 10 years ago to 350 today.

"Easily 30 per cent of the people that go to Algodones are Canadian," Vinluan said. "It's really hard to find [the actual number] because no one tracks who is going in and out of the border and nobody keeps track of whether [the clients] are Canadians or Americans."

At the Simply Dental Clinic in Algodones, about 30 to 40 per cent of customers are Canadians, most of them flocking to the centre between October and April, said owner Danilo Daspar. Daspar usually charges $150 to $300 for a crown, while a set of full-fit dentures can be had for $400.

"Right now it's a little bit slow," he said, but added the crowds will pick up this winter as more people are lured south by the cheaper rates.

Prices in Los Algodones, according to a website for dentists in the area, are 70 to 75 per cent less than in the U.S. and significantly lower than in Canada, even with a dental plan that could knock off up to 80-per-cent off some of the work.

PepsiCo's can tampering rumors (1993)

PepsiCo's can tampering rumors (1993)

Image: Youtube

The crisis: A syringe was allegedly found in a can of Diet Pepsi in Washington state. The following week, more than 50 reports of Diet Pepsi can tampering sprung up across the country. It turned out to be a hoax.

How PepsiCo responded: Both PepsiCo and the FDA were confident that the reports were fabrications, so the company came out hard, defending itself staunchly against the accusations.

But PepsiCo didn't make vague statements telling the public to simply trust it. The company produced four videos throughout the crisis, such as a comprehensive report on its soda canning process. The most compelling was a surveillance tape of a woman in a Colorado store putting a syringe into a can of Diet Pepsi behind the store clerk's back.

PepsiCo North America CEO Craig Weatherup appeared on news stations armed not only with visual evidence of the bogus reports, but with the explicit support of the FDA. He appeared most notably on Nightline with FDA Commissioner David Kessler, and they both assured the public that Diet Pepsi was safe.

The result: The rumors fizzled out within two weeks following multiple arrests by the FDA for filing false reports. Diet Pepsi sales had fallen 2% during the crisis but recovered within a month.

The situation required an aggressive defense because PepsiCo hadn't done anything wrong. If the company remained quiet and complacent the damage could have been far worse.

Secondly, the “toxic environment” and its impact on MS’ products. Since MS has a performance review system that values “individual” contributions over team work, everybody want to make impact on everything. Another way to read it is that everybody wants to voice opinions and suggestions and drive them to execution, which commonly lead to mutually exclusive ideas, and you, as a PM, will have to figure out a way to make everyone happy if you want to make progress. That leads to dysfunctional products. As a matter of fact, I remember the template I *had* to use to set my commitments/deliverables had something like “you go to spec review meetings and make valuable comments

US has world's largest GDP. However, GDP is a very poor measure of overall health and happiness of the general population. We need to add two more indexes, general health index and general happiness index to accurately judge what is going on with the people.

EU has started "OECD Better Life Initiative" to judge different countries based upon these criterion. Here is an interactive graphic that ranks various countries

This winter, sixty five graduate students studying for their Masters of Financial Engineering earned, on average, an annual salary of $94,068 working at Wall Street firms. As interns.

The generic term for what the students are studying to become is "quants," financial engineers that (generally) design trading systems.

Four years ago, $90,000 was about the average starting base salary paid to quants who had already graduated. But this year, at least 65 graduate students made that much as interns (the actual number of graduate student "quant" interns is undoubtedly much higher).

Of course their salary was paid monthly, $7,839 per month, and it was only for 3 months, but the significance is in the annual number. Because Wall Street interns are typically paid salaries comparable to what they would make as employees -- without bonus -- their annualized salaries provide a good starting point by which to measure what a firm would pay as a base salary if it hired them.

Not all degrees are equal.

Tue, 24 May 2011 20:35:00 -0700 BILL GATES: He Got The Big Stuff Right And Never Let Go http://business1001.posterous.com/bill-gates-he-got-the-big-stuff-right-and-nev http://business1001.posterous.com/bill-gates-he-got-the-big-stuff-right-and-nev

Reading it 16 years later, it's amazing how accurate it was -- even if Microsoft didn't capitalize on all the opportunities he laid out. By December 1995, Bill Gates was sure that:

  • The Internet would dominate computing: "The Internet is the most important single development to come along since the IBM PC was introduced in 1981. It is even more important than the graphical user interface."
  • The open Web would kill services like AOL and MSN: "The On-line services business and the Internet business have merged....every On-line service has to simply be a place on the Internet with extra value added."
  • Free ad-funded content would win, but would be a hard business: "Although there is room to use brand names and quality to differentiate from free content, this will not be easy and puts a lot of pressure to figure out how to get advertiser funding....The challenge of becoming a leader in any subject area in terms of quality, depth, and price will be far more brutal than today's CD[-ROM] market. For each category we will have to decide if we can be #1 or #2 in that category or get out."
  • A cheap portable Web browsing device would threaten Windows/Intel: "One scary possibility being discussed by Internet fans is whether they should get together and create something far less expensive than a PC which is powerful enough for Web browsing....Gordon Bell and others approached Intel on this and decided Intel didn't care about a low cost device so they started suggesting General Magic or another operating system with a non-Intel chip is the best solution."
  • Microsoft needed to do way better in search. " Of particular interest are sites such as YAHOO! which provide subject catalogs and searching....Amazingly, it is easier to find information on the Web than on the Microsoft corporate network....[Our products] do not support text indexing as part of their queries today which is a major hole. Only when we have an integrated strategy will we be able to determine if our in-house efforts are adequate or to what degree we need to work with outside companies like Verity."
  • Peer-to-peer communication would be important: "Eventually you will be able to find the name of someone or a service you want to connect to on the Internet and rerouting your call to temporarily be a point-to-point connection will happen automatically."

Mon, 23 May 2011 23:44:00 -0700 Special report: Big Pharma's global guinea pigs | Reuters http://business1001.posterous.com/special-report-big-pharmas-global-guinea-pigs http://business1001.posterous.com/special-report-big-pharmas-global-guinea-pigs

(Reuters) - The Polish port city of Gdansk is famous for its shipyards. Hungary's fifth largest city, Pecs, is known for its ancient architecture and brewery. Neither is particularly renowned for medicine. Yet when AstraZeneca Plc tested its big new drug hope Brilinta on heart attack patients in a major clinical study, it was hospitals in these places that enrolled some of the highest number of patients anywhere in the world.

In fact, Poland and Hungary together accounted for 21 percent of all subjects studied in the pivotal 18,000-patient trial -- more than double the United States and Canada combined.

A few years ago that would have been unthinkable. Major drug companies, with an eye on the commercial promise of the world's largest and most profitable market, would have run half their tests on a major cardiovascular medicine like this in U.S. hospitals under the supervision of U.S. doctors.

Today, the clinical trials business has gone global as drugmakers seek cheaper venues for studies and cast their net further afield for big pools of "treatment-naive" patients who are not already taking other drugs that could make them unsuitable subjects for testing new ones. And it is not only the practicalities of running big clinical trials as efficiently and cheaply as possible that is driving the change. The drug industry is also paying a lot more attention these days to the promise of emerging markets, whose healthcare authorities, just like those in the United States and Western Europe, are keen to see cutting-edge science conducted in their backyards.

"The motivation to involve lots of patients is very high in Eastern European countries and also in Asia," says Dr. Ivan Horvath, head of interventional cardiology at the University of Pecs. "There are three factors driving this. Our patients get access to a new drug, which is free during the trial. It is also very important for scientific reasons. And we get paid."
